A Lead Earned in the Second Half

The 61–42 win put Edward Waters alone atop the SIAC, but the halftime deficit and explosive response both matter.

Week 5 perspective

These are HBCU Game Central’s editorial observations from the completed Week 5 slate. Results are attributed to the official conference source below.

First place came with a warning

Edward Waters beat Kentucky State 61–42 and moved to 4–0 in SIAC play, taking sole possession of first place. The league report says the Tigers trailed by 14 at halftime before scoring 47 points in the second half. The outcome shows remarkable recovery, but the halftime deficit is part of the story too.

How the comeback took shape

The SIAC report credits quarterback Tavion Faulk with 498 passing yards and four passing touchdowns, plus another score on the ground. It also describes a forced fumble and return that gave Edward Waters a short field early in the comeback. The offense did more than score once in response; it repeatedly turned the game’s direction after Kentucky State answered.

What the result proves

Beating the other unbeaten SIAC team matters directly in the standings. It also supplies evidence that Edward Waters can make an adjustment under pressure. But a 61-point output should not become an expectation for every week. The useful next test is whether the Tigers can start cleaner and still find answers when the next opponent changes the tempo.

The longer view

Edward Waters has a bye before its road game at Benedict on October 17, according to the SIAC report. That break gives the staff time to study both halves of the Kentucky State game. The first half identifies what needs work; the second shows what this group can do when it finds the right response. Both belong in an honest account of the new conference leader.
